The History of the Chais

Chapter One: The Girl Who Loved Chai Tea
Now there are some people who believe that the history of the Chais begins on an old mountaintop in Chile with Chai Viejo and there are others who believe it begins near the River of Ebbe in Moracco at the Chai Tea cafe but I am here to tell you that the history of the Chais begins in New York City when a sad old man needed a friend.

The man's named was Arthur and as a young man he was extremely happy. His happiness was due to two things he loved. The first was toys --- or if you want to get really specific --- stuffed animals. He had loved stuffed animals ever since he was a boy. He had studied medicine in college and was going to become a doctor but when he graduated, he realized he didn't really want to open up people's chests or replace their hips, what he really wanted to do was collect stuffed animals. And so he decided to take some money that his father had left him and open a toy store. Naturally, he called his toy store, Arthur's Toys and right away, people loved it.

Arthur as a young man

Suddenly Arthur was very nervous. But a voice inside him said, "If you go over to this girl, you will be as happy as when you see your stuffed animals. So, Arthur got up all his courage and he walked over to the girl. He said in a shy voice, "Is this seat taken?" The girl looked up and then back down again. "No, you may sit here." "Thank you," Arthur said. "What's your name?" The girl did not look up but she said shyly, "Marie Luna." "Have you been ice skating?" Arthur asked. This made the girl's whole face change. "Yes!" she said with a big smile. "It is my favorite thing in the world. Every Sunday, I go to Central Park to ice skate in the winter. I twirl around and around, it feels so lovely and so fresh and so cold. Then I come here to this coffee shop and I have a warm cup of Chai Tea. It feels magical! There's nothing in the world like cold skating and warm Chai.

Arthur smiled at Marie Luna. Then he took another chance.

Now the other thing that Arthur loved was his wife, Marie Luna. In 1922, before he met Marie Luna, Arthur was alone. But one day, Arthur walked next door from his toy shop to a small cafe and he saw a beautiful woman sitting near the entrance. She wore her hair short as was the fashion of the time and she had a pair of ice skates over her shoulder. He smiled at her and she smiled back. Or I should say she smiled for a split second before looking down at her tea very quickly.

Arthur walked up to the counter to order a cup of black coffee, as he always did, and then went to sit down at a table. Except that the cafe was very crowded and there was nowhere to sit. But he did notice an empty next to the girl and he was thought maybe he could sit with her.

"That sounds wonderful," he said. "But I have never been skating. Could you take me sometime?" Marie Luna looked down again. "Yes, I can and I will. Meet me by the dolphin fountain at the Central Park Ice Skating Rink next Sunday at 10am." Then she took a last sip of the Chai Tea, got up quickly and walked out.
Chapter Two: The Magical Spill

Chai GG in 1922

Every day before Arthur opened his toy store, he would arrange his stuffed animals on the shelves, making sure that they were sitting up straight, that they faced the customers and that they looked as real as possible. He loved collecting them and buying new ones for the store. He had a secret too. He never sold his three favorite stuffed animals. Instead he put a "SOLD!" sign on each of the three stuffed animals so that customers would think someone had already bought them --- that way he could make sure they would always be there.

His three favorites were a dog, a cat and a buffalo. The dog was very cute. She was black and white with a cute pink tongue and she wore glasses. That was very strange since he had never seen a dog with glasses before. She didn't have a name but he marked her "A" since she was the first dog he had gotten for the store. There was an old buffalo that looked very strong and fierce. He did not have a name either but Arthur called him "One" since he was the first buffalo he had gotten for the store. There was also a cat who was pink. She had long whiskers and a stiff tail and a funny circle over one of her eyes. He thought she was a good girl cat so he called her "GG" for "Good Girl."

Now after their day skating at Central Park, Arthur and Marie Luna went to the toy store. "I can't wait to show you my store," Arthur told her. "Especially the stuffed animals!" Marie Luna loved the Lincoln Logs and the dolls and the model cars. But she especially loved Arthur's stuffed animals most of all. Arthur made her a cup of Chai Tea and they brought his favorite three stuffed animals: A and GG and One into the small kitchen behind his office and put them on the table next to them as they drank the Chai Tea and had chocolate chip cookies.

They talked about this and that and then there was a pause in the conversation. Arthur looked deep into Marie's eyes and she looked deeply back into his. Suddenly he had the urge to kiss her. He leaned over the table but before his lips found hers, he tipped over the Chai Tea all over the table. "Oh...my Chai" she screamed, "It's everywhere!" Arthur jumped up but before he could do anything, the Chai Tea soaked all three stuffed animals. They were covered in Chai. "Oh Arthur," Marie Luna, "your stuffed animals, they are so wet." "Yes," muttered Arthur sadly. But then he looked up at GG and he was sure ---well, almost sure --- that he saw GG's tail move...just a little.

Where Marie Luna and Arthur went ice skating
Chapter Three: Strange Happenings

Arthur and Marie Luna continued to live out their days happily. On the anniversary of their first ice skating trip, they were married with all of their friends in attendance. At the ceremony, they brought One, A and GG and Arthur’s best man (his brother Frank) held the stuffed animals.

They worked at the toy store selling stuffed animals and other toys to their customers --- except for the chosen three stuffed animals, of course. They went ice skating in the winter and went swimming in the summer. They tended to their garden and ate at old-time delis.

Arthur and Marie Luna liked to bring the stuffed animals everywhere they went. On the ice, Marie would hold A (the biggest of the three) and Arthur would hold GG and One. When they went swimming at the beach, they would arrange the three stuffed animals on their towel and sometimes even wave to them from the water. The stuffed animals were very special to both of the newlyweds.

Now ever since the day that Arthur had spilled the Chai Tea onto the stuffed animals, they always smelled a little bit like Chai Tea, especially in the hot, muggy months. Jokingly, Marie Luna began to refer to them as “Chai GG” and “Chai A” and “Chai One,” because of their funny Chai smell. When A’s glasses broke and they made her new ones, they actually wrote “Chai A” on the frames of the glasses.

In the months after the tea-spilling incident, Arthur got into a funny habit. Each night, Marie Luna would fall asleep first. Soon after he kissed her goodnight, (“Goodnight, my Chai Luna,” he would joke), he would soon hear her light snoring. But Arthur would lay awake with the habit of thinking about Chai GG’s tail. He was sure he had seen it move on the day when he spilled that Chai Tea.

He started to think perhaps it was magical Chai Tea. He was not the type of man to believe in ghosts or the supernatural, but you know, he thought, that Chai Tea is really good. Perhaps it could be magical?

Then other strange things started to happen. One day, Arthur saw a cockroach in the store. Terrified, he raced into the next room, which happened to be the showroom where he kept all the stuffed animals. His heart, having gotten one shock from the cockroach, soon got another shock. He looked up on the shelf to see Chai GG, Chai One and Chai A sitting around a table with a tea set on the table. Even stranger, he thought he saw the teacup still moving slightly when he raced into the room --- almost like one of the stuffed animals had quickly set it down on the table, when Arthur had unexpectedly raced into the room.

Careful to avoid looking around the room where he had seen the dreaded cockroach, Arthur went downstairs to find Marie Luna.

“Chai Luna,” he said, “did you put the Chai stuffed animals around a tea set Darling?”

“A tea set?” she asked. “Goodness, no. I have been too busy this morning with all the customers.”

“Well, they are sitting around a tea set,” replied Arthur.

“Are you sure?” said Marie Luna, laughing. “I think you are becoming loco, Arthur. Next thing you are going to be telling me that there are cockroaches in the upstairs showroom.”

“Uh…well…” said Arthur.

Chapter Four: The Radio Incident and Chai B Arrives
Above: Arthur's radio was kind of suspicious.

Now Arthur’s habit at night was more complex. He spent long nights thinking about Gigi’s tail and he thought about the tea set incident. Then a few months later, a third event was added to his late-night thinking habit. It was October of 1925 now and the radio had recently been invented. Everyone was getting radios for their houses and businesses, it was the latest craze!

Arthur and Marie Luna put their brand new radio in their living room and were excited to listen to shows like Jack Benny’s Comedy Hour and the Lone Ranger. One night, Arthur couldn’t sleep as he was thinking about you-know-what. Feeling thirsty, at about 3:30 AM, he decided to go into the kitchen for a glass of milk. Passing through the living room, he heard the radio on at a very low volume. That’s weird, I must have left the wireless on. he thought to himself. (People called their radios “wirelesses” in the 1920s). When he turned on the light, he was shocked to see the three stuffed animals facing the radio, almost as if they had been listening to it. The program on the radio was called “The English Tea Hour.”

Arthur did not mention this incident to Marie Luna. After all, he loved her very much and he did not want her to think he was crazy.

After ice skating the next day, the couple wandered through a small fair that had been set up in Central Park. The fair had rides and cotton candy and tables where merchants sold small trinkets and perfumes and hats. Marie Luna noticed one table where there were some stuffed animals being sold by a very old lady. She looked like she might be over 100 years old and she had a very long nose, a nose ring and strange but very kind pink eyes. “Is there something you would like to purchase, Marie Luna?” said the lady. Marie Luna did not even notice that the old lady had called her by her name, which the lady had no reason to know. She had been distracted by the old lady’s pink eyes and the fact that she smelled a little like Chai Tea.

Marie looked at a very cute stuffed dog with a handsome face. “Oh, you like Chai B, do you?” said the lady.

“What did you say?” said Arthur shocked.

Marie Luna continued to just look into the old lady’s eyes in a dazed state. The old lady turned to Arthur and winked at him.

“I said, ‘Oh you like my tea, do you?’” and she held up a cup of tea. Arthur looked puzzled.

Marie Luna came out of her daze and enthusiastically told the lady, “I will take this dog here.” The lady nodded seriously and handed them the dog and a receipt. Arthur noticed the receipt said Ch #4: CB.

On the walk home Marie Luna was very quiet. Then she looked up into Arthur’s eyes and said: “I will call him Chai B. He is the husband of Chai A, you know.”

Chapter Five: Strange Things and Stranger Things
About a week after Arthur and Marie Luna brought Chai B home, Arthur received a strange letter in the mail. It was from the kind old lady that had sold them Chai B. The Letter said,
"Dear Arthur and Marie Luna, I hope you are enjoying Chai B."
(Arthur wondered how she knew Chai B's name) She went on....
"He is a good dog but you may see him do some funny things. I hope you know your Chais are very special but that they are not the only ones. There are many, many Chais and some day there will be one Chai who looks different but is the kindest and loveliest Chai of all. Look inside this envelope and you will see her name.

Arthur was very surprised. He dug inside the envelope but he did not see any names. Instead he saw a small baby bee. The bee was alive. Arthur thought, how did a bee ever survive inside a sealed envelope? The baby bee flew off but Arthur thought he almost heard it buzz, "Bzzzzzluuuuubzzzzzna"....

If Arthur thought that was strange, there would be stranger things yet. For instance, he soon started getting up every night around 3 in the morning to go into the living room. Each night, he would again find the Chais gathered around the radio listening. He realized somehow they were getting there on their own. He was not putting them there and Marie Luna said she was not putting them there. Not only that, they would always be listening to the same song. It was called "It's Only a Paper Moon." You can hear it to the left. Arthur liked the song, but why this song? What could it mean. He decided it was time to tell Marie Luna. He went into the kitchen and found Marie Luna cleaning her ice skates.
"Uh...dear...I have to tell you something." Arthur said.
"Yes darling" she replied.
"Ummm...I don't know how to tell you this but I think our Chais might be special. And I think a small baby bee from the moon may be coming to visit us soon."
"That's nice, dear" said Marie Luna.

Marie Luna sometimes got distracted when she was cleaning her ice skates and this was one of these times. Arthur figured it was just as well...it sounded a little crazy anyway.
Chapter Six: A Movie inside a Movie
The next strange thing that happened was at the movies. Arthur and Marie Luna went to see a film called The General with Buster Keaton. It was a good movie and Arthur loved Buster Keaton movies, they were very funny. But while he was watching it, all of a sudden the movie stopped and another movie came on the screen. No more Buster Keaton. This movie had words, the movie he had been watching was a silent movie. This new movie was with a little girl. The scene he saw is here>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then just as fast as the scene played, suddenly the Buster Keaton movie was back on the screen and the little girl was gone. Arthur was amazed. He leaned over and whispered to Marie Luna... "My love, did you see that?? The scene with the little girl? She said her name was Addie ??" Could that be the girl that the letter mentioned?"

But Marie looked at him like he had drunk too much wine. "Umm...no darling, I just saw Buster Keaton. You say you saw a little girl?"
Just then a man in the row behind them said, "shhhhh, no talking at the movies!" and so they had to be quiet.

Arthur looked back at the projector above them showing the movie and for just a second he thought he saw someone with pink eyes.
The last strange thing that happened that year had to do with a strange postcard that Arthur received. One day, Arthur went to the mailbox and he found a postcard. It was from a place he had never heard of before. A city in the country of Mexico. He had heard of Mexico of course, but he had never heard of this strange place called Guadalajara. Arthur pronounced it with the j sounding like the j in the word "jet." The postcard showed the city of Guadalajara. When he turned it over, Arthur saw a message.
It said, "Senor Arthur, La ciudad de Guadalajara esta la casa de la puebla de los chais."

Arthur did not speak Spanish and he had no idea what it said although he recognized the word Chais and his own name. He also knew that the word casa in Spanish meant "case." But what kind of case? Like a suitcase? He figured that maybe the baby bee from the moon would arrive in a suitcase. This is really strange, he thought.

Chapter Seven: A Puzzling Question
But the strangest thing of all happened the day after the postcard. Arthur received another envelope in the mail that was signed "From Your Friend Chai Checkmark." "That's very strange," thought Arthur, "we don't have a stuffed animal named Checkmark." But he was so curious to find out what was in the envelope that he opened it quickly without thinking too much. There was a small note.
"Hello Arthur, this is Chai Checkmark. You will be meeting me soon. When we do meet, make sure to listen very carefully. I wanted to tell you about the Chai that is coming soon, the kindest and loveliest Chai of all. Put these puzzle pieces together and you will meet her."
Arthur could feel that were some other items in the envelope and he dumped them out on the table. They were puzzle pieces. Except this was the strangest puzzle he had ever seen. It looked like a photograph, except that the photo was cut up into pieces like a puzzle. But even stranger was that it appeared to be a color photograph. He raced into the kitchen to get Marie Luna. "Chai Luna," he shouted, "come look at this."
When she had come into the living room to see, he said, "Can you believe it, it looks like a color photograph?!"

Marie Luna and Arthur, of course, had never seen a color photo before. It was 1937 and all photos were in black and white. Here is what they saw:

"But what is it?" asked Marie Luna. "I don't see anything recognizable here. Except some shoes maybe."
"Well, let's put it together," said Arthur. "I do believe you are right, Darling. I see some shoes as well. They look like old black ones." They began to move the puzzle pieces around a little. Here's what they saw.
"Ok now I definitely see shoes," said Marie Luna. "But look at that yellow and blue shoe. Have you ever seen a shoe like that before, Arthur?"
"Definitely not, my love," he replied. "It almost looks like a shoe from...I know this sounds crazy but...from the future."
"You know, darling," said Marie Luna, "I was going to say the same thing!"
"Let's keep playing with the puzzle and see what else we can find."
They moved around some more pieces and they saw this:

At this point, Marie Luna became very excited. "Look at that yellow thing with the orange circle around it," she said.  "I've never seen it before but it almost looks like some kind of giant yellow statue, like a series of arches."
"Right my love," said Arthur, "Like the kind of arches they might build in 67 years when it is the new millennium."
"I think someone is building a paper model of something that will be built in the future, Arthur!"
"Yes, but we need to go to the psychiatrist, darling. This is impossible."

But the biggest surprise was yet to come. They moved the pieces around some more and a little girl appeared!
They both stared at what they saw.
Almost a minute went by.
Finally, in a whisper, they both said the same thing at the same time.
"Could this be the baby bee?"
